Cumberland RI hosted the 2021 RI BioBlitzList Item 3
The 2021 Rhode Island BioBlitz took place October 1 and 2, 2021, between 2 p.m. and 2 p.m.
What is a BioBlitz?
It is an intense period of biological surveying in an attempt to record all the living species within a designated area. Groups of scientists, naturalists and volunteers conduct an intensive field study over a continuous time period.
Cumberland was chosen as the town to host the site of the 2021 RI BioBlitz. During this unique event, more than 120 scientists, naturalists and volunteers flocked to the town land to identify and tally as many species of plants, animals and other organisms as possible within 24 hours.
At the close of the event, about 723 species had been documented. As of 10/13, the total had risen to 780 as team captains reported final IDs.

BioBlitz Teams - RI National History Survey
In a BioBlitz, volunteers working in teams have 24 hours to tally as many species of animals and plants as they can on a particular parcel of land. A typical year draws 150-200 participants from throughout the northeast and identifies 900-1400 species, depending on site, weather, and the expertise on the teams.
