The Cumberland Land Trust

Who we are. . .

The Cumberland Land Trust is a private, non-profit, charitable, conservation organization run by a dedicated group of volunteers. Our mission is to preserve the natural resources of Cumberland for present and future generations by preserving land for open space.

Since incorporation in 1989, we have helped protect 350 acres of land acquired through purchase, donation and conservation easements.

The Land Trust applies for grants from private foundations and organizations and from government sources to help acquire select properties including streams, ponds, wetlands, open space, working farms, scenic and natural sites and historically significant properties.

The Cumberland Land Trust is a sponsor of The Land Trust Alliance, a national organization of land trusts, and works closely with The Nature Conservancy of RI, the RI Audubon Society, and the 43 other land trusts in the state.

Lets prevent even more scaring of the land.

The Cumberland Land Trust, Inc. is a private, locally-controlled corporation. Any Cumberland resident may become a member of the Corporation by paying a modest annual fee which helps meet operating expenses. Members meet annually to elect directors. The directors have the primary responsibility of fulfilling the purpose of the corporation.

As long as Cumberland remains an attractive place to live, property values will remain high. This is important to remember should you wish to re-sell. The conservation of open land does not create the need for additional services to the town; thus, it minimizes the strain of rapid development.

The conservation of the natural resources in Cumberland will help to preserve the charm, beauty, and history of our town, enhancing the quality of life for all.

Become a member. The Cumberland Land Trust will only be as strong as the will of its members.

Donate money or land to the Trust for conservation purposes. Donations may be made by lifetime gift or by will. Because the Trust is a charitable organization, donations will result in tax savings to you.

Donate a conservation easement to the Trust, giving it the right to restrict development, while you retain title. This gift will also mean tax savings to you.

Cumberland Land Trust, Inc. is a charitable organization. Membership fees and donations of money or land will result in tax savings for you. As a tax-exempt organization, all assets of the land trust must be held for its charitable purpose. No director or office of the land trust receives compensation.

We believe the Cumberland Land Trust is uniquely suited to serve our community. Controlled by Cumberland residents, it's only focus is the preservation of assets in Cumberland. Because the land trust is private, it is flexible and can act quickly. The Cumberland Land Trust is not limited in the types of properties or property interests it can hold.

With the strong feeling that we have a real stake in preserving the rural character of our town, it is hoped that every Cumberland family will want to participate and become a member of the Cumberland Land Trust.

Remember, the future of Cumberland depends on your foresight. If you wait, many of the natural resources of Cumberland will be gone. So join now!
